North Korea will never surrender its nuclear weapons: Kim Son

North Korea has often rebuked the West for nudging it to give up its nuclear arsenal, which the western countries see as a threat to the region and to the United States

North Korea’s deputy foreign minister, Kim Son Gyong, in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday reiterated his country’s stand when it comes to its nuclear arms programme.

North Korean officials have made it clear the country will never give up its nuclear arms programme, which they said is meant for deterrence and peaceful purposes.

North Korea has often rebuked the West for nudging it to give up its nuclear arsenal, which the western countries see as a threat to the region and to the United States.

North Korea’s deputy foreign minister, Kim Son Gyong, in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, reiterated his country’s stand when it comes to its nuclear arms programme.

Saying the recent joint military drills conducted by the US, South Korea, and Japan, were designed to stimulate responses from North Korea and meant to threaten it, the diplomat criticised the three nations for rehearsing procedures and methods that could be used during a nuclear attack against the North.

"Thanks to our state's enhanced physical war deterrent in direct proportion to the growing threat of aggression of the US and its allies, the will of the enemy states to provoke a war is thoroughly contained and the balance of power on the Korean Peninsula is ensured,” Gyong said.

He said these drills have only strengthened the resolve of Pyongyang to strengthen its nuclear armament despite heightened tensions in the Korean peninsula.

The minister made it clear that demanding denuclearisation from North Korea is akin to asking the nation to surrender its sovereignty and its right to existence.

The development comes a day after China and North Korea agreed to strengthen their bilateral ties, including broader cooperation in defence and trade, with mutual respect.

China is also seeking to expand its sphere of influence in the Korean peninsula since South Korea and Japan host the biggest military bases in the region to counter China.
