Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit India later this month, National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval confirmed on Thursday.
While Doval did not specify the exact dates, Russia's news agency reported that the visit is expected to take place in late August.
Speaking from Moscow, Doval said, “We have a special, long relationship, and we value this relationship. We have had high-level engagement, and these high-level engagements have contributed very substantially. We are very excited and delighted to learn about the visit of President Putin to India. I think the dates are almost finalised now.”
Putin’s planned visit comes at a time of escalating tensions between New Delhi and Washington, sparked by India’s ongoing trade ties with Moscow.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed a new executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India, citing New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The new measure effectively doubles the total tariff rate on certain Indian goods to 50 per cent.
Washington has also warned of secondary sanctions on nations that continue to buy Russian oil, unless Moscow agrees to halt its war in Ukraine by Friday. The conflict has now entered its fourth year, with no signs of resolution.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin said on Thursday that President Putin is also expected to meet President Trump in the coming days.
Yuri Ushakov, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Russian President, confirmed that preparations for the meeting are underway, and that both sides have agreed on a venue. The location of the talks will be announced at a later stage.
