Iranian Ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, has said that nuclear disarmament is the only way to achieve long-lasting global peace.
He cautioned against the threats posed by nuclear weapons to the collective peace and security of the world.
Bahreini made these comments during the meeting of the UN Disarmament Conference while expressing his concern.
He noted that at the same time as the 2025 meeting of the Disarmament Conference begins, an unprecedented arms race, especially in the field of nuclear weapons, and rhetoric and threats to use these weapons continue.
“A massive chunk of the resources that could be used and devoted to social and economic upliftment of the people with the establishment of sustainable peace and collective security in the world has been used on developing, maintaining, and renewing nuclear weapons and warmongering,” he said.
Bahreini mentioned that unfortunately, the countries possessing these nuclear weapons have not failed to fulfil their obligations regarding nuclear disarmament as per the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty (NPT), but have upgraded, renewed, and modernised their nuclear arsenals.
"There are about 3,880 active nuclear weapons and about 12,000 nuclear warheads in total in the world, and countries with nuclear weapons, especially NATO member countries, continue to use weapons in violation of legally binding obligations under the NPT Treaty and the agreements,” he said.
