At least 100 people have lost their lives in intensified Israeli airstrikes across Gaza and Lebanon, in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election as the 47th president of the United States.
The Gaza Health Ministry reported that over 50 people, including 42 from the besieged northern region, were killed in the latest Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) airstrikes on Thursday.
In Lebanon, the Health Ministry confirmed that Israeli airstrikes led to the deaths of 53 people and injuries to around 161 others on various roads across the country over the past 24 hours.
Among the injured were six Malaysian UN peacekeepers associated with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
They sustained injuries when an airstrike hit a nearby vehicle, claiming three lives in Lebanon’s Sidon city.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in a reported 43,469 Palestinian casualties, predominantly women and children, and approximately 102,561 injuries in Gaza since October 7, 2023.
On that same day, Hamas launched an assault on Israel, leading to the deaths of 1,139 Israelis and the capture of over 200 people, with around 100 still in captivity.
Meanwhile, Lebanon has reported 3,103 casualties and 13,856 injuries from Israeli attacks since the escalation of the Gaza conflict on October 8.
The recent spurt in violence comes on the heels of the US presidential election on November 7, which saw Republican candidate Donald Trump elected.
In his victory speech, Trump vowed to bring an end to the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East upon taking office on January 24 next year.
