The Punjab provincial government in Pakistan has officially launched the 'Wagah Joint Check Post Expansion Project', aimed at significantly increasing the capacity of the border facility.
The project, costing PKR 3 billion, is set to enhance the check post’s capacity from 8,000 to 24,000 people. Completion is expected by December 2025.
The expansion, which began accelerating after its signing in February, will include the construction of a state-of-the-art historical museum, waiting lounges, and green rooms for VVIPs. Security arrangements will also see upgrades.
Additionally, the project involves increasing the height of the flagpole at the border, from 115 to 135 meters, making it the third tallest flagpole globally. The flagpole will also be relocated to correct its current off-centre position.
"The work on the ground has been accelerated now," an official from the Punjab government stated.
