Pakistan pleads for more loans as Op Sindoor hits economy

Pakistan has appealed to international partners for more loans after suffering significant economic and military losses during India's Operation Sindoor. The plea, made through the Economic Affairs Division's official X account, follows widespread drone strikes, stock market turmoil, and mounting debt pressures.

The Pakistan government has appealed to international partners for more loans following heavy military and economic losses suffered during India’s ongoing Operation Sindoor, which has targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The appeal, made through the verified account of the Economic Affairs Division, Government of Pakistan, on the social media platform X, reflects the deepening economic crisis in the country, where stock markets have been in free fall amid escalating hostilities.

The Economic Affairs Division posted, “Govt of Pakistan appeals to International Partners for more loans after heavy losses inflicted by enemy. Amid escalating war and stocks crash, we urge international partners to help de-escalate. Nation urged to remain steadfast.”

Pakistan's economy, already struggling under significant debt, faces additional strain. The country owes approximately USD 8.8 billion to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), making it the fourth-largest debtor to the global financial institution. Pakistan’s benchmark KSE-100 index has lost over 7,500 points, or 6%, since April 23. On Monday, Moody’s warned that prolonged escalation with India could further damage Pakistan’s economic stability and fiscal consolidation.

On Thursday, Indian Armed Forces successfully neutralised multiple Pakistani drone and missile attacks aimed at critical military installations across northern and western India during the night of May 7-8. The operation reportedly included strikes on Pakistan's air defence systems, with the Indian Armed Forces targeting radars and air defence units in Lahore and other regions.

Addressing a press briefing, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, “This morning, the Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. Indian response has been in the same domain with same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised.”

“On the night of 07-08 May 2025, Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles. These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks,” Colonel Qureshi added.

The Indian Army also confirmed repelling multiple drone attacks and ceasefire violations along the western border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir on the night of May 8-9.

The Army stated, “Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along entire Western Border on the intervening night of 08 and 09 May 2025. Pak troops also resorted to numerous ceasefire violations (CFVs) along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and befitting reply was given to the CFVs. Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation. All nefarious designs will be responded with force.”

Sources revealed that the Indian Army shot down over 50 Pakistani drones during a large-scale counter-drone operation along the LoC and International Border (IB) earlier on Thursday.
