Pakistan’s security forces have carried out coordinated ground and air operations along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in response to terror attacks, killing as many as 29 terrorists, officials said on Monday.
In a post on X, Pakistani Minister of Information Attaullah Tarar said the operation was launched in response to multiple attacks by terror groups across the country.
“Three targets in Paktia, Paktika and Kunar were destroyed during precision strikes,” Tarar said on X, referring to three eastern Afghanistan provinces.
However, the Afghan Taliban, which currently rules the country, is yet to issue a formal response on the developments.
The violence has surged in Pakistan over the past few weeks, with terrorists belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan carrying out multiple attacks on security establishments and police.
Authorities have blamed the Pakistan Taliban, known by the acronym TTP, and allied armed groups for most of the violence.
The retaliatory attacks came days after terrorists belonging to the TTP carried out twin attacks on paramilitary rangers in the southern city of Karachi, killing at least three forces personnel.
In response, security forces reportedly killed six terrorists and arrested one of the members of the TTP during the encounter.
Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a breakaway faction of the Pakistan Taliban, claimed responsibility for the Karachi attack in a statement on Saturday night.
Tarar said Pakistan’s latest operation along the Afghan border targeted hideouts and safe havens of the Pakistan Taliban.
The Pakistan Taliban are a separate armed group from the Afghan Taliban, but both are allies in the region.
