Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said Pakistan will host the signing ceremony of the peace pact between the United States and Iran in Switzerland. He said the deal is not just between two countries but a victory of peace and dialogue.
He called it a major diplomatic achievement while addressing the National Assembly on Pakistan’s role in efforts to end the conflict that had affected global energy markets.
Shehbaz described the agreement between the US and Iran as a historic step towards peace. He said it marked a “new beginning” after what he termed three months and 16 days of continuous diplomatic efforts that led to an end of military action, including in Lebanon.
He added that both sides showed patience and restraint during negotiations despite difficult conditions. He said the world is now witnessing a significant moment of peace.
US President Donald Trump has announced that the US and Iran have reached a deal to end their 107-day conflict, which had triggered a global energy crisis.
According to the Pakistan prime minister, the agreement will be formally signed on June 19 in Switzerland. He said Pakistan will host the signing ceremony in Geneva and congratulated the nation and the international community. He said it is a proud moment not only for Pakistanis inside the country but also for those living abroad.
The prime minister said his government will work to ensure that the benefits of global economic stability from this agreement reach every citizen of Pakistan. He added that the war had serious global economic consequences and also impacted Pakistan’s economy, effects of which are still being felt.
Pakistan, which he said played a key mediating role in the talks, helped facilitate communication between Washington and Tehran and supported diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
He also praised Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir, saying he played an important role in easing tensions and supporting peace efforts. He said there were moments when progress seemed uncertain, but continued efforts helped achieve a ceasefire.
The prime minister also thanked Pakistan’s political leadership, including Nawaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, for supporting the peace initiative. Earlier, Shehbaz Sharif had announced on social media that a peace agreement had been reached and that the signing ceremony would take place in Switzerland on Friday.
