A top French Army officer recently highlighted that France is evaluating the Indian-made Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system for its defence needs, marking a significant boost for India's "Make in India" initiative in the defence sector.

The French Army’s Brigadier General Stephane Richou, who is in India for talks, confirmed that France is assessing the Pinaka system among other options offered by leading countries in the defence industry. This move underscores India's growing prominence as a major producer of advanced military hardware.

Brigadier General Richou, speaking to the media, acknowledged India’s status as one of the top countries manufacturing weapons, noting the country’s role in global defence production.

The evaluation of the Pinaka system, he said, is part of France’s search for an effective multi-barrel rocket launcher system that meets its military requirements.

The Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India, has become one of the country’s prominent defence exports. It is manufactured by several Indian companies, including Solar Industries, Larsen & Toubro, Tata, and Ordnance Factory Board.

Known for its impressive range, the Pinaka system can hit targets up to 75 kilometres away, and its multiple variants are designed to meet diverse operational needs.

With growing international interest, the system has already been successfully exported to Armenia, and more countries are lining up to incorporate it into their defense arsenals.

The discussions between India and France about the Pinaka system reflect the strengthening defence ties between the two nations. Earlier this year, during a high-level visit by India’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, the potential of the Pinaka system for export was highlighted.

This move is in line with India’s broader strategy to push indigenous defence systems to international markets. Since the Narendra Modi government assumed power in 2014, India has tripled its defence exports, a testament to the country’s growing capabilities in military technology.

Brigadier General Richou also emphasised that the cooperation between India and France goes far beyond just business dealings. He noted that the relationship between the two countries is based on mutual respect and shared goals for a common future.

France and India are already collaborating on advanced defense projects, such as the joint production of Scorpene-class submarines. This partnership exemplifies the strong strategic and technological ties that have been cultivated over the years.

The relationship between the two nations is further symbolised by the joint military exercises conducted under the "Shakti" series. These exercises, which are held annually, allow the Indian and French armies to enhance their cooperation and share valuable military expertise.

For the 25th edition of these exercises, Brigadier General Richou revealed that the French Army would be inviting a strong detachment of the Indian Army to participate in their country. This exchange reflects the ongoing commitment to strengthening defence ties and fostering deeper military cooperation.

In addition to defence collaboration, India has also become a significant exporter of electronics to France, making it the second-largest importer of Indian defence equipment, after the United States. This growing trade in defence goods highlights the deepening strategic partnership between the two countries.
