During their first meeting since the October 7 Hamas attacks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in discussions with Israeli President Issac Herzog on the sidelines of the COP28 climate meeting in Dubai, reiterated the necessity of ongoing humanitarian aid for the affected population in the region.
The Indian Prime Minister expressed condolences for the lives lost in the October 7 attacks and welcomed the recent release of hostages by Hamas. The conflict between Israel and Hamas was a focal point in Modi's bilateral meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as well.
The leaders reviewed their bilateral ties and exchanged views on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Modi also extended an invitation to the UAE President to attend the Vibrant Gujarat Summit next month. More than 140 heads of states and governments, including Modi and Herzog, are participating in the high-level segment of the annual climate change conference.
Although Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was originally scheduled to attend, he withdrew and sent a representative instead. The Israel-Palestine issue prominently featured in discussions between leaders, including those held by Modi.
In the meeting with Herzog, the Prime Minister emphasized the continued and safe delivery of humanitarian aid for the affected population. He reiterated India's support for a two-state solution and stressed the importance of an early and durable resolution of the Israel-Palestine issue through dialogue and diplomacy.
