Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday responded warmly to US President Donald Trump’s conciliatory post, calling India and the United States “close friends and natural partners” even as tensions linger over Washington’s punitive tariffs.
“India and the US are close friends and natural partners,” Modi wrote on X. “I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest.”
His comments came just hours after Trump posted on Truth Social, saying he looked forward to speaking with Modi in the coming weeks. “I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries!” Trump wrote.

The exchange comes as bilateral ties remain strained over Washington’s 50 per cent tariffs on Indian imports linked to Russian oil purchases. A trade deal hangs in the balance, following days of sharp rhetoric from Trump’s aides branding India the “Kremlin’s laundromat” and labelling the Ukraine war “Modi’s war.”
Trump himself had complained that Washington had “lost” India to “dark China” after photos from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit showed Modi with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin. By week’s end, however, Trump softened his tone, describing ties with India as “special” and stressing his personal bond with Modi.
The Prime Minister, in turn, said he “appreciates and fully reciprocates” Trump’s positive sentiments, adding, “We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people.”
