A golden medallion of diplomacy adorned India-Ghana relations on Thursday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the West African nation’s highest civilian distinction.
The honour, presented by President John Dramani Mahama in Accra, was awarded in recognition of Modi’s “distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership.” The moment marked a rare diplomatic milestone as no Indian Prime Minister had visited Ghana in over three decades.
Taking to X, Modi wrote, “Honoured to be conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’.” In his address following the conferral, he dedicated the award to the “140 crore people of India,” calling it a symbol of shared aspirations and enduring friendship.
“This honour deepens the friendship between India and Ghana and places new responsibility on me to continue enhancing bilateral ties,” said the Prime Minister, expressing gratitude for the gesture.

The Ministry of External Affairs described the recognition as a powerful reflection of the evolving partnership between the two countries, rooted in democratic values, historical solidarity, and a shared commitment to global equity.
The two leaders held wide-ranging discussions earlier in the day, resulting in an agreement to elevate bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The agenda encompassed cooperation in trade, digital innovation, education, sustainable development, and capacity-building.
Modi expressed that his visit aimed to reimagine the contours of India-Ghana engagement. “My historic visit will add fresh momentum to our relations and deepen mutual trust,” he noted, pledging to nurture the next phase of South-South collaboration.
The award presentation and strategic talks came as part of Modi’s ongoing five-nation tour, which seeks to consolidate India’s presence across Africa and reinvigorate alliances within the Global South.
