US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “not that happy” with him because of the tariffs imposed by Washington on India over its purchases of Russian oil.
Speaking at the House GOP Member Retreat, Trump claimed that Prime Minister Modi had personally requested a meeting with him. “Prime Minister Modi came to see me, ‘Sir, may I see you please’. Yes,” Trump claimed.
“I have a very good relationship with him. He is not that happy with me because they are paying a lot of tariffs now. They say they are not doing the oil, but they are. They have now reduced it very substantially, as you know, from Russia,” Trump said.
Trump said his administration has imposed a total of 50 per cent tariffs on India, including 25 per cent linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil.
He also said India had told him that it had been waiting for five years to receive Apache helicopters. “We’re changing it. We’re changing it. India ordered 68 Apaches,” Trump said.
