Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Monday conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the highest civilian award of the Republic of Cyprus, in a ceremony underscoring the enduring diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The award, named after the first President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III, was presented by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. The Order of Makarios III is the nation’s senior-most order of knighthood and represents a gesture of exceptional recognition.
“Humbled to receive the ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III’ of Cyprus. I dedicate it to the friendship between our nations,” Prime Minister Modi said in his remarks following the investiture.
Dedicating the honour to India’s 1.4 billion citizens, Modi added: “It is an award to the trusted India-Cyprus friendship. I am confident that in the time to come, our active partnership will touch new heights. Together, we will not only strengthen the progress of our two nations but also contribute towards building a peaceful and secure world.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Ministry of External Affairs noted: “President @Christodulides conferred PM @narendramodi with the ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III’ of Cyprus. The honour reflects the enduring India–Cyprus bilateral partnership and shared commitment to work together for the common vision for peace, progress and prosperity.”

Prime Minister Modi is currently visiting Cyprus on the first leg of his three-nation tour. Following his engagements in Nicosia, he is expected to travel to Canada to attend the G7 Summit, and later to Croatia.
The gesture by Cyprus is seen as a mark of deepening relations between the Mediterranean island nation and India, particularly in areas of diplomacy, trade and cultural cooperation.
