Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, on Sunday. The SCO is a regional political, economic, and security organisation founded by China.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This meeting comes amidst heightened tensions between the United States and India. The Trump administration, in August, imposed a 50 pc tariff on Indian goods entering the US, the highest in Asia, to penalise India for its crude oil purchases from Moscow.
On Sunday, PM Modi also met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Both leaders pledged to resolve their border differences and strengthen cooperation. This marks PM Modi's first visit to China since the deadly border clashes in 2020 led to a deterioration of relations.
In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Modi stated that relations with China have progressed in "a meaningful direction," and noted that "there is a peaceful environment at the borders after disengagement."
According to China's state broadcaster CCTV, President Jinping expressed his hope that the Tianjin meeting would "further elevate" and "promote the sustained, healthy and stable development of bilateral relations."
In addition to these meetings, PM Modi also met with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on the sidelines of the summit. During their meeting, PM Modi affirmed that India's developmental cooperation with the Maldives is mutually beneficial for the people of both nations.
