The recent parliamentary elections in the Maldives have delivered a resounding victory for the People's National Congress (PNC), led by President Mohamed Muizzu.

This landslide win not only consolidates Muizzu's political power but also signifies a significant shift in the Maldives' geopolitical stance, particularly regarding its relations with China and India.

With the PNC securing 66 seats out of the 93-member parliament, including a super-majority, Muizzu's party now holds a commanding position in the legislative body.

This electoral triumph is seen as a validation of Muizzu's agenda, which includes forging closer economic ties with China, a departure from the Maldives' traditional reliance on India.

One of the central themes of Muizzu's campaign was his commitment to enhancing economic cooperation with China, exemplified by ambitious infrastructure projects and land reclamation initiatives.

Despite environmental concerns raised by some critics, Muizzu has pledged to combat the challenges posed by rising sea levels through innovative engineering solutions, such as building higher islands.

The electoral defeat of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which managed to secure only a dozen seats, underscores the shifting political landscape in the country.

The MDP, which previously held a super-majority in parliament, now finds itself marginalised, unable to counter the surging popularity of Muizzu and the PNC.

Muizzu's victory in the parliamentary elections follows his successful presidential campaign last September, during which he positioned himself as a pro-China candidate.

His close ties with China have raised concerns among some observers, particularly in neighbouring India, which has traditionally wielded significant influence in the Maldives.

The outgoing parliament, dominated by the pro-India MDP, has sought to obstruct Muizzu's efforts to realign the Maldives' diplomatic relations. However, with the PNC's overwhelming majority in the new parliament, Muizzu is expected to face fewer obstacles in implementing his agenda, including initiatives aimed at reducing Indian influence in the country.

Overall, the outcome of the Maldives' parliamentary elections underscores the country's evolving geopolitical dynamics and its growing importance in the Indian Ocean region.

As Muizzu consolidates his power and pursues closer ties with China, the Maldives is likely to remain a focal point of regional geopolitics for the foreseeable future.
