The fight in Moldovan presidential elections heats up with the pro-EU party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) on track to top polls in the closely watched parliamentary election as counting continues on Monday.
This election is considered critical for not only Moldova but also the EU and Russia, as the small nation has gained massive geopolitical importance after the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.
While it appears that the Pro-EU PAS party might manage to secure a tightly contested win over pro-Russian parties, the elections have been marred by controversies, as opposition parties have cried foul play by the country’s election body and the present dispensation.
"There should be relief in all of Europe because peace, progress, and democracy are winning," Marian, a PAS lawmaker, said. "And I think we did a great job in fighting the mighty Russian dictatorship.

We fought with them and not necessarily the opposition,” he said. Some of the pro-EU lawmakers have said that Moldova wants peace and development under the European family.
With 98 per cent of votes counted, the results showed that around half of Moldovans favoured staying on the EU course. The ruling pro-EU Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), which has held a strong parliamentary majority since 2021, secured 49.6 per cent of ballots, according to preliminary results.
While the pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc came second, winning 24.6 per cent. More than 1.59 million, or about 51.9 per cent of eligible voters, had voted in the election, the Central Electoral Commission reported.
