A 26-year-old Punjab-origin woman was shot dead by a 37-year-old Canadian man of Punjabi descent in Toronto, officials said. Police authorities identified a Brampton-based man who has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman was fatally shot during what officials said was a planned targeted attack.
The victim has been identified as Navneet Kaur from Toronto, while the suspect, Sharnjeet Singh (37), has also been charged with failing to comply with an undertaking. Police are probing the possible linkages and connections between the two to ascertain the exact causes leading to the deadly incident.
During a press statement, Toronto police said the victim and the suspect were engaged in a brief interaction when the suspect opened fire at the victim.
Police and emergency officials rushed to the scene after reports of a shooting and administered life-saving measures. However, the victim was pronounced dead at the crime scene.
According to the police, the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived but was later arrested following a search operation by officers of the Ontario Provincial Police.
Sharnjeet Singh is now facing charges of first-degree murder under Canadian law, and his trial has already begun on Saturday. A witness, who was having coffee nearby, told police he saw a man approach the woman, speak with her briefly, and then open fire.
