Thailand’s latest viral sensation is not a pop star or an influencer but a two-month-old pygmy hippopotamus named Moo Deng.

The temperamental yet charming hippo has captured global attention after performing a “moonwalk” that quickly went viral on social media platforms.

A video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, shows Moo Deng taking several steps backward inside her enclosure, mimicking Michael Jackson’s iconic dance move.

“Whoa stop everything... Moo Deng doing the moonwalk,” read the viral post's caption, which garnered millions of views within hours.

Social media users were quick to shower Moo Deng with praise. “Her name is Michael #Moodeng,” one user quipped, while another suggested, “Wouldn't that be the Moo-Walk?”

Moo Deng is a pygmy hippopotamus residing in Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Si Racha, Chonburi, Thailand.

She gained popularity notability at two months of age in September 2024 after popular Internet meme images of her went viral online.

Visitors flock to see her, often waiting for hours to catch a glimpse of the hippo, who remains close to her mother, Jona.

In September, her popularity led to a fourfold increase in zoo revenue, prompting the zoo to limit viewing times and launch a livestream for fans worldwide.

Her playful antics have earned her the nickname "bouncy pork" in Thai, and she has become a symbol of conservation efforts for the endangered pygmy hippo species.

The zoo has even introduced hippo-themed merchandise, with proceeds supporting improved animal care facilities.

However, Moo Deng’s fame has not been without controversy. Animal rights group PETA has criticised the zoo for keeping endangered animals like Moo Deng in captivity.

Despite these concerns, her fans remain loyal, captivated by her charm and quirky personality, even forgiving her for playfully biting her trainer's leg.
