As External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar prepares to attend the swearing-in ceremony of US President Donald Trump on January 20, a significant Quad meeting of foreign ministers from India, Japan, Australia, and the US is expected to take place on January 21 in Washington DC.

This meeting marks a pivotal moment for the Quad, as it will be the first gathering under the Trump 2.0 administration.

According to Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the ministers are anticipated to meet on the sidelines of the inauguration.

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Jaishankar will have the opportunity to engage with US Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio, a staunch advocate for strengthening US-India ties, particularly in the face of China’s increasing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Trump administration’s stance on strategic partnerships and technology cooperation, particularly with India, has been evident in past policies, including a proposed Bill by Rubio that seeks enhanced cooperation and limits on security assistance to Pakistan.

Rubio’s advocacy for India’s strategic alliance with the US has consistently focused on countering China’s influence and bolstering Indo-US diplomatic, economic, and military ties.

Jaishankar’s visit also includes discussions with Vice President J D Vance and NSA-designate Mike Waltz, continuing the momentum established during previous US-India collaborations.
