Officials said six of the children had sustained critical injuries and were pronounced dead, while one girl was rescued alive.

At least six children lost their lives and another was injured after the roof of a mud-built house collapsed in Pakistan’s Shangla district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, local officials said on Tuesday. The tragic incident occurred in the Rahimabad area of Lower Alpuri, where a room inside a mud house suddenly gave way, trapping several children beneath the debris.

Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene after residents alerted authorities. Rescue workers, assisted by local villagers, launched a swift operation to clear the debris and search for survivors. After an intensive rescue effort, all seven children were pulled from the wreckage. Officials said six of the children had sustained critical injuries and were pronounced dead, while one girl was rescued alive and rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Her condition has not been disclosed.

The deaths have cast a shadow of grief over the local community, with residents expressing shock and sorrow over the loss of so many young lives in a single incident. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse, although mud houses in several rural parts of the province are often vulnerable to structural failures due to age, poor construction materials, and weather-related damage.

Incidents involving the collapse of mud houses and poorly maintained structures are not uncommon in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in remote and mountainous areas where many families continue to live in traditional dwellings. The latest tragedy comes just weeks after a similar accident in Pakistan’s Charsadda district. In that incident, three children were killed and a husband and wife suffered serious injuries when the roof of their house collapsed unexpectedly.

The recurring incidents have raised concerns about housing safety in rural regions, with calls for authorities to improve infrastructure standards and provide support for vulnerable families living in unsafe structures. Local officials have expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured that assistance would be provided to those affected by the disaster.
