Russian forces recovered chemical weapons filled with banned toxins at a former Ukrainian hideout in the Donetsk region, the Federal Security Service (FSB) informed on Tuesday.

This is the second time this year that Russian forces have discovered the banned international weapons from the village of Ilyinka during an advance by Russian forces, they said.

In footage released by the FSB were seen handling the alleged chemical-filled vials in full chemical protection gear, reportedly having been filled with chloropicrin – a choking agent prohibited under the Chemical Weapons Convention. As per the latest statement, the Agency told reporters that these packages were filled with plastic explosives and rigged into improvised munitions designed to be dropped from drones.

The FSB officer said, "This year, we have discovered two caches with munitions intended for drone strikes on Russian positions. These munitions were a mix of chloropicrin and plastic explosives to maximise the area of effect." The official said that the use of such weapons is prohibited and that Ukraine is violating international law.

"Each case of preparation and use of chemical weapons by Ukraine is documented by the relevant authorities to ensure that none of the perpetrators will escape accountability," the official said, adding all of those responsible will be punished under Russian law.

Moscow’s deputy minister of industry and trade, Kirill Lysogorsky, said, "The Ukrainian regime systematically prepares and deploys chemical agents – not only against Russian forces and officials but also against peaceful residents in affected territories."

Moscow has constantly called out Ukraine for violating the use of illegal munitions on the battlefield. In December, Kirillov was murdered in his apartment in Moscow in a bomb blast that Russian authorities linked to Kyiv’s special services.
