The “emotional” remarks by US President Donald Trump on the status of Ukraine peace talks are “completely understandable,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.
Trump, who has repeatedly voiced frustration over the lack of progress, admitted this week that he had thought Ukraine would be the “easiest” issue to resolve because of his ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “He’s really let me down,” Trump said on Thursday.
Asked about Trump’s comments, Peskov acknowledged the US president’s personal investment in efforts to settle the hostilities. “We assume that the US and President Trump personally maintain their political will and intention to continue their efforts to facilitate a settlement in Ukraine. Therefore, of course, President Trump is quite emotional, so to speak, about this issue. This is completely understandable,” Peskov told reporters.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also addressed Trump’s remarks during an interview with Russia’s Channel One. He suggested the disappointment reflected the US leader’s business-driven approach to politics. “The US president is a man of action, deals, and business, as he himself constantly emphasises,” Lavrov said.
“When President Trump says he’s disappointed… it’s partially explained by the fact that he wants quick solutions. In some areas, this may work; in others, it’s unlikely,” Lavrov added.
In recent weeks, Trump has signalled growing dissatisfaction with the state of negotiations, warning of fresh sanctions against Russia. He has reiterated his readiness to tighten restrictions but called on Washington’s European allies to stop purchasing Russian oil before any new measures are imposed.
“I’m willing to do other things, but not when the people that I’m fighting for are buying oil from Russia,” Trump said on Thursday.
