The Russian Ministry of Defence (MOD) claimed that its forces had shot down 121 Ukrainian drones overnight across various parts. The MOD in a statement said, “On the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, its forces engaged and destroyed 121 fixed-wing Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles.”

The ministry said that over 34 kamikaze drones were downed on Sunday from 8:30 am (0530 GMT) to 3 pm (1200 GMT), including one over the territory of the country’s capital, Moscow. So far, one person has been killed as a result of the falling debris in the Saratov Region, the region's governor said. In contrast, the Ukrainian air defences on Sunday reported that Russia launched an overnight attack on the country with at least 100 Kamikaze drones.

Meanwhile, the Russian defence ministry confirmed the series of drone attacks from Ukraine were repelled by the air defence systems positioned across the targeted locations. It said the largest number was taken down over the Krasnodar Territory, where 29 drones were shot down.

Followed by the Bryansk region, where its forces intercepted and destroyed 13 drones. In the Belgorod region, the Russian forces confirmed the downing of 12 drones. Voronezh saw nine drones destroyed, the Saratov region and Stavropol Territory each recorded eight, and the Kaluga region reported seven interceptions.

Six drones were downed in Tula and five in Rostov. Ryazan’s defences confirmed the downing of four, while the Smolensk, Oryol, and Tver regions each reported one interception. Two more drones were destroyed over the Sea of Azov. The attacks have come at a time when the Russian president and the United States president are set to hold their first-ever direct and bilateral talks in Alaska on August 15 to discuss the negotiated settlement of the Ukraine war.

The development has reportedly made the Ukrainian leader nervous, fearing the move could not only settle the war but also see an end to his presidency in the country, which had officially ended in 2024.
