Russia's drone strikes cause blackout in Kyiv

Fresh Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have caused a widespread blackout in the capital, Kyiv, officials said. However, the Russian Ministry of Defence has yet to comment on the latest development taking place between the two warring parties.


During the early morning hours on Friday, Kyiv’s Mayor Vitaly Klitschko claimed the country’s capital was under “massive Russian attack”, which left the entire left bank of Kyiv “without power supply”. He said the attack has left hundreds of households without electricity, while it has affected the water distribution.


So far, nine people have suffered injuries, with five of them taken to the hospital for treatment.  “The situation is difficult,” he said. Klitschko said drone strikes have set several residential buildings on fire in the city, urging citizens to “stay alert and inside shelters until further orders.”

As per the eyewitness testimonies, several c The strikes caused widespread power outages, with some local accounts claiming that part of the right bank had lost power.


Meanwhile, officials in the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporozhye also said that Russian attacks and fires killed one while leaving two others seriously injured.

 

Russian armed forces have intensified their military operations against the Ukrainian forces following recent escalations. The Russian Ministry of Defence said that the attacks were a retaliation for Kyiv’s “terrorist” raids into the country, which often target critical infrastructure and residential areas. Moscow maintains that its attacks never target civilians.
