The conflict between Russia and Western Europe shows no sign of abating as Moscow scales up its military operation in Ukraine, following Trump’s latest comments hinting at providing military aid and intelligence to Ukraine.
The Russian Ministry of Defence (MOD) has claimed that its armed forces are now in control of two-thirds of the infrastructure in Ukraine’s northern Kharkiv region.
“Russian troops have blocked a large group of the enemy from the northern and western sides, taking it in a half-ring,” said a statement by the MOD.
Ukraine, in response, has carried out several drone strikes inside Russia, causing massive energy disruptions and fuel shortages in certain parts of the country, even as Moscow positions its entire focus on the northern side, aiming to create a passage for its forces to descend to the eastern region of Donetsk, whose complete capture Moscow has prioritised.

The Russian defence ministry further said that “taking control over Kupiansk will allow the Russian troops to advance towards the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration.”
On September 25, the Russian MOD also claimed to have seized more than 4,714 square kilometres (1,820 square miles) of Ukrainian territory this year.
Meanwhile, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington-based think tank, independently assessed the real figure to be closer to 3,434 sq km (1,325 sq miles).
With backing from a majority of the Western countries and the US, Ukraine’s territory losses have slowed down, but its forces haven’t been able to deter Russian forces from invading and capturing more territory.
The rejection of talks, failed ceasefire attempts, and impossibly difficult demands have further complicated the war in Ukraine.
As of October 3, 2025, the war is only intensifying in Ukraine. Experts say that there is no way the collective efforts of the west can inflict any impactful defeat on Russia.
Hence, both sides must focus on diplomacy to settle the conflict that has been ongoing for more than three years now.
