Russian armed forces have launched a decisive military operation in the northeastern Sumy region, after Moscow denied engaging in tripartite peace talks with Ukraine and the United States.
Russian forces have pushed deeper into the Ukrainian front lines and captured more territory in recent weeks despite ongoing peace talks.
US special Envoy Steve Witkoff said that over the past two days in Florida, “The Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev held productive and constructive meetings with the US delegation.”
No breakthrough has yet emerged, amid constant deadlock due to unrealistic demands from both sides.
Witkoff clarified that Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is only observing the peace talks and has no direct role in the peace efforts.
"Russia remains fully committed to achieving peace in Ukraine," Witkoff said.
"Russia highly values the efforts and support of the United States to resolve the Ukrainian conflict and re-establish global security."
Witkoff and Ukraine’s National Security Council Chief Rustem Umerov said in a post on X, “Talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine were held between American and Ukrainian officials in Florida over the last three days and were 'productive and constructive.'”
“Ukraine remains fully committed to achieving a just and sustainable peace. Our shared priority is to stop the killing, ensure guaranteed security, and create conditions for Ukraine’s recovery, stability, and long-term prosperity,” the envoys said.
They said that “Ukraine highly values the leadership and support of the United States and the continued close coordination with its partners in the next stages of this important work.”
Meanwhile, a Russian drone attack over the weekend struck a sunflower oil storage near the black Sea city of Odesa on Sunday.
