At least 15 Ukrainian mine workers were killed and 17 others injured in a Russian drone strike in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, as they were returning from their shift. The attack occurred just two days before the second round of trilateral Ukraine-Russia talks is due to resume in the UAE.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal described the strike on a bus carrying DTEK energy firm miners as ‘cynical’ and targeted at the country’s energy sector amid severe winter shortages. DTEK accused Russian forces of carrying out a ‘terrorist attack’ on civilians linked to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
In a separate incident, Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian forces struck a maternity hospital and residential building in the Zaporizhzhia region.
Ukraine’s emergency service said three women in the hospital’s gynaecology reception area were injured in the drone attack, sparking a fire that was later extinguished. Regional administration head Ivan Fedorov later raised the number of injured to six.
Russian forces have continued large-scale drone and missile strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, causing widespread blackouts in the Odesa and Kharkiv regions. Dnipropetrovsk regional administration head Oleksandr Hanzha reported, “Russia launched 90 attack drones, with 14 striking nine locations.”
Russia’s Defence Ministry officials stated that its forces had used operational-tactical aviation, attack drones, missile forces, and artillery to strike transport infrastructure used by Ukrainian forces.
Meanwhile, Russian air defences shot down 21 Ukrainian drones over southwestern and western Russia on Sunday.
