Emergency workers extinguish a fire in an apartment building that was damaged during a Russian drone strike.

At least three people were killed and 18 more were injured, while dozens of government buildings were set on fire in Kyiv following a drone and missile attack by the Russian forces, officials said on Sunday morning.

Confirming the latest attack, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the Russian attack killed a young woman and an infant on Sunday and sparked fires at several high-rise apartment buildings in the city’s west and east. Meanwhile, Timur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s city administration, later confirmed the body of a 1-year-old child was recovered from the rubble.

He said, Drone debris caused fires atop multi-storey residential and government buildings in the Sviatoshynskyi district in Kyiv’s west.

Meanwhile, similar claims were made by the Ukrainian media outlets on Sunday, saying that residents were forced to take shelter while the drones kept coming from the Russian side. The attacks, which also knocked out power in the city, left smoke rising from the roof of Ukraine’s Cabinet, housing the offices of its ministers.

“This is the first time since 2022 that Russian forces targeted and destroyed government buildings in Kyiv, including the roof and upper floors,” said Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. “We will restore the buildings, yet the lives lost are a loss to the country," she said.

She said, “The international community must respond to this destruction caused by the Russian forces. There is a serious need to intensify sanctions against Moscow, primarily against Russian oil and gas.”

Russian forces have intensified their attacks on Kyiv in recent months and have threatened to carry out decisive strikes in Ukraine, especially after the SCO summit.

Ukraine’s air force said that a total of 805 drones and 13 missiles were launched at Ukraine overnight. Meanwhile, an earlier Russian drone attack on Saturday evening in Zaporizhzhia in the southeast also wounded at least 15 people, four of whom were hospitalised.

Russia has turned the heat on Ukraine in recent days. The aim, according to Putin, is to create buffer zones deep inside Ukraine, inflicting maximum damage to Ukraine’s military infrastructure, while making Zelensky kneel. Putin on Friday said, “What peace talks won't accomplish, Russian forces will.”
