A Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, has resulted in the death of at least one person, with several others injured.
According to Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, the embassies of Albania, Argentina, North Macedonia, Palestine, Portugal, and Montenegro sustained damage during the attack.
Ukrainian officials also reported missile strikes in the southern city of Kherson, where one person lost their life, and several others were injured in surrounding cities and towns.
Russia has stated that its military targeted Ukrainian military infrastructure with long-range precision weapons in retaliation for a recent attack on its Rostov region.
That attack, Russia claimed, involved US-made long-range ATACMS missiles and four UK-made Storm Shadow missiles.
The strikes follow remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a marathon news conference, where he proposed a missile “duel” with the US.
Putin asserted that Russia’s newly developed Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile could defeat any American missile defence system.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasised the need for European and American support to secure lasting peace.
His comments came as he met with EU leaders during their final summit before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump next month.
