A South Korean court on Wednesday ordered former first lady, Kim Keon Hee, to one year and eight months in prison for corruption.
The Seoul Central District Court found her guilty of accepting bribes from Unification Church officials in return for business favours.
“The defendant is sentenced to one year and eight months’ imprisonment,” judge Woo In-sung of the Seoul Central District Court said.
The court, however, acquitted her for alleged stock manipulation.
Hee’s 20-month conviction comes ahead of the verdict for her husband, disgraced former President, Yoon Suk Yeol, over his martial law imposition in 2024.
The ruling comes about three weeks before the court delivers its verdict on the rebellion charge against Yoon, for whom the independent counsel had earlier demanded the death sentence.
