Pakistan’s newly elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Shareef raised the Kashmir issue in his inaugural address on Sunday but vowed to strengthen relations with other leading nations, including the country’s neighbours.
Shehbaz said, that Pakistan will not be part of any “great game” and that his administration would enhance its number of friends. He promised to strengthen and enhance relations with all important nations, including neighbours.
“We will maintain equal relations with our neighbours,” Shehbaz, 72, added after handily winning the National Assembly election to become Pakistan’s prime minister for the second time.
Shehbaz equated the “Kashmir issue with Palestine”, and said: “Let’s all come together and pass a resolution for the freedom of Kashmiris and Palestinians,” he added.
He praised his partners in the alliance for placing their faith in him and appointing him as Leader of the House.
He said, “When my Quaid (leader Nawaz) was elected prime minister three times, the country saw unprecedented growth.
He also draws references from Pakistan founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah and said, it is not incorrect to claim that Nawaz Shareef is the one who built Pakistan,” he said.
Shehbaz, the joint candidate of the PML-N and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), earned 201 votes in the 336-member parliament.
Shehbaz’s competitor, Omar Ayub Khan of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), received 92 votes.
