Singapore Airlines aircraft dropped 6,000 feet after hitting turbulence, tracking data shows

Singapore Airlines aircraft dropped 6,000 feet after hitting turbulence, tracking data shows

A British man, 73, with a heart condition died and 30 other passengers were injured when a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER on its way from London to Singapore hit severe turbulence on Tuesday, dropping down almost 6,000 feet before making an emergency landing at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, flight tracking data showed on FlightRadar24.

 

Flight data showed the aircraft cruising at 37,000 feet before dropping to 31,000 feet over three minutes and remaining steady for 10 minutes before before making an emergency landing in Bangkok, Thailand.

 

Scenes of chaos unfolded in the cabin when the aircraft was airborne, with passenger photographs documenting a crew member with bloodied face, blankets and food strewn around everywhere.

 

Oxygen masks deployed and objects went flying around.


The airline in a post on X said 18 people were taken to hospital and 12 received treatment.

Videos showed a row of ambulances queueing up on the tarmac as emergency crews from Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital were on board to help the injured, many of them with head injuries as they were not wearing seatbelts.

 

Various media outlets quoted the general manager of Suvarnabhumi airport telling reporters that seven people were in a critical condition in Hospital.

 

About 23 passengers and one crew member had less severe injuries, he said. 

 

A Singapore Airlines flight was expected to arrive later at night at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport to fly out passengers who are able to travel.
