A small aircraft was reportedly hijacked from the Vancouver Island region in Canada on Wednesday, according to local police. The incident led to heightened security measures and brief disruptions at one of the country’s busiest airports.
Shortly after the plane touched down at Vancouver International Airport at 2:15 am IST (1:45 pm local time), the suspect—the only person on board—was arrested. The person was arrested without incident upon landing, according to authorities.
Although they confirmed the arrest, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) would not provide additional information about the suspect or the reason for the purported hijacking. A number of flights were delayed or diverted as a result of the incident, which caused a brief halt in airport operations. Online videos and pictures depicted a dramatic scene on the airport runway, with armed police officers surrounding the suspect as he stood next to a Cessna plane with his hands raised. The tiny aircraft seemed undamaged, and there were no injuries.
According to Canadian broadcaster CBC, a flying club from Victoria, the provincial capital on Vancouver Island, was operating the Cessna. A public statement about the incident has not been released by the club. Investigators are still looking into how the plane was taken and whether appropriate security procedures were broken during the illegal flight.
