Mass killings and genocidal-level crimes committed by the RSF militia have forced millions of Sudanese to flee for their lives, turning the country into an epicentre of suffering, said the UN's humanitarian affairs chief.

More than 12 million have been displaced, with more than 40,000 dead in the civil war, figures that aid groups believe are much higher. The situation in Sudan is horrifying, said Tom Fletcher, the UN's under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs.

He said, “The conditions are grim in the country right now—it is the epicentre of the humanitarian suffering in the world.” The war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who were once allies, started in Khartoum in April 2023 but has spread across the country.

The ongoing fighting has inflicted unimaginable misery on a nation that was already suffering from a humanitarian crisis. "I spoke to so many people who told me stories of mass executions, mass rape, and sexual violence being weaponised as part of the conflict," he said.

In one of the incidents last month, the RSF militia massacred more than 450 people at a maternity hospital in the city. Showing no remorse, the RSF, without expressing any guilt, said they were “forced to kill them because the Sudanese government refused to step down.”

Sudan’s military leader, General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, said on Friday that his forces would not stop until the RSF was wiped out.

He declared, “There is no end to this war; it will not end with a truce or with dialogue, but only when these terrorists are destroyed,” adding, "We call on all Sudanese to join the fight, and urge those who can carry weapons to come forward."
