Syrian president Basher Al-Assad’s wife, Asma Al-Assad, has filed for divorce and expressed her desire to return to the United Kingdom, reports said.

The reports said Asma Al-Assad is not satisfied with the way things are taking place in Moscow, where she is residing with her husband Basher Al-Assad.

Asma has allegedly applied to a Russian court seeking special permission to leave the country, with her application currently under review by Russian authorities.

Born in London in 1975 to Syrian parents, Asma al-Assad holds dual (British-Syrian) citizenship.

The couple has three children: Hafez, Zein, and Karim. Asma has reportedly sought to exile herself in London with her children since the Syrian uprising began.

Meanwhile, Assad, now residing under asylum in Moscow, faces severe restrictions implemented by Russian authorities. Although an asylum request has been accepted, he cannot leave Moscow or engage in political activities.

Additionally, the Russian authorities have also seized Basher’s assets, which consist of 270 kilograms of gold, $2 billion in cash, and 18 properties in Moscow, reports claim.

The Assad dynasty, which ruled Syria for nearly 6 decades, lost its control. As a result of the rebel takeover of the country.

Syria, despite having a predominantly Sunni population, was ruled by the powerful minority Alawis Shiite group. Hafez, who got the power through a military coup in 1965-66, ruled Syria with absolute authority, controlling all institutions of Syria.

He remains a centre of controversy among Syrians, who have for long viewed him as the “butcher of Syria." Subsequently, his son and ousted president Basher were also called “the butcher of Syria” for killing unarmed protesters during the 2011 uprisings.

Basher’s rule in Syria is what the international community termed the most evil following the killing that his forces carried out in Syria during the 13-year-long conflict.
