Incoming United States National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has said that potential phone talks between US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to take place within the “coming days or weeks.”
He believes that talks are likely to occur once President-Elect Donald Trump assumes office on 20 January.
He told reporters that the potential call could serve as the basis for further negotiations and a direct in-person meeting between Putin and Trump.
“We have not set an exact framework for it, yet we’re working on that. But I do expect a call, at least in the coming days and weeks. That will be a step and we’ll take it from there,” Waltz said.
The incoming top US official did not mention how and when the talks were going to take place between the two leaders, adding that only preparations are underway.
Earlier, Donald Trump said a meeting with the Russian president was being prepared, signalling that it would only take place after his swearing-in on January 20.
Moscow has repeatedly responded with positive signals to communicate with the incoming US President as well.
However, Moscow is still skeptical, as no roadmap or plan has been shared by the US government on the exactness and seriousness of the potential meeting.
Although they have said that they will respond positively to constructive dialogue with the US on the condition that “Ukraine relinquishes its claims on some territory” occupied by Russian forces since 2022.
