Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday visited Dhaka University and offered prayers at the grave of Sharif Osman Hadi, on the third day of his return to the country after nearly 17 years abroad.

During the visit, Tarique, who is the son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, also offered prayers at the grave of National Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam, which is located beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque.

Hadi, who was the spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho, died this past week in Singapore where he was undergoing treatment after being shot, and was laid to rest next to the poet’s grave on December 20.

BNP Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, arrived at the graveyard earlier and accompanied Tarique during the visit.

According to party sources, Tarique left his Gulshan Avenue residence around 10.40 am in a white bulletproof SUV under tight security arrangements and reached the Dhaka University campus at approximately 11.15 am. A significant security presence was deployed in and around the area during his visit.

Following the visit to the graves, Tarique was scheduled to go to the Election Commission office to complete his National Identity Card (NID) registration and enlist himself as a voter. He was also slated to visit Mahbub Bhaban in Dhanmondi, the residence of his father-in-law, and later proceed to Evercare Hospital to see his ailing mother.

However, his planned visit to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), commonly known as Pangu Hospital, to meet individuals injured during the July 2024 mass uprising was cancelled, party sources confirmed.

Hadi, a student leader and a candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in the head on December 12 while travelling in a rickshaw on Culvert Road in Puratan Paltan. The incident occurred a day after the Election Commission announced February 12 as the date for the next national election.

The youth leader was initially rushed to a hospital in Dhaka and later airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical treatment. He succumbed to his injuries on the night of December 18. He was widely regarded as a prominent figure in the July 2024 mass uprising and served as the spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho.
