In a significant political move, the Ethiopian parliament appointed Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie as the new President of Ethiopia. This decision came after the completion of the term of the previous President, Sahle-Work Zewde, who served for six years as the head of state.

The new President was sworn in on Monday before members of both houses of the Ethiopian parliament, namely the House of Peoples’ Representatives and the House of Federation.

Taye Atske Selassie brings with him a wealth of experience from his diplomatic career, which spans over three decades. Before his appointment as President, he served as Ethiopia’s foreign minister since February of this year.

His extensive background includes a notable role as Ethiopia's permanent representative to the United Nations, highlighting his experience in international relations.

In addition to his diplomatic roles, Atske Selassie was also a foreign policy adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, further establishing his credibility in the political arena.

His appointment marks a new chapter for Ethiopia as he steps into the role of President, representing Africa’s second most populous nation.

The former President, Sahle-Work Zewde, made history in October 2018 when she became Ethiopia’s first female President.

Her leadership was a significant milestone for gender representation in the country. Now, as Taye Atske Selassie takes the helm, Ethiopia looks forward to his leadership and vision for the future.

Atske Selassie's appointment is a clear indication of the Ethiopian government’s commitment to continuity in leadership, especially in light of ongoing challenges that the nation faces. With a focus on diplomacy and international relations, it is expected that the new President will work to strengthen Ethiopia’s position on the global stage.

In his new role, Atske Selassie will not only be responsible for addressing internal matters but will also play a crucial part in fostering relationships with other nations.

His experience at the United Nations and as a foreign minister is anticipated to be instrumental in navigating Ethiopia’s foreign policy and diplomatic efforts.

The Ethiopian parliament’s decision to appoint a new President underscores the importance of democratic processes in the country. As the nation transitions from one leadership to another, there is a collective hope for stability, growth, and progress under the new administration.

The role of the President is critical in shaping the future of Ethiopia, and with Atske Selassie at the forefront, many are optimistic about the potential for positive change.
