The delay in implementation of IMEC due to West Asian turmoil is a matter of concern: EAM Jaishankar

The ambitious India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is encountering setbacks in its implementation due to the ongoing turmoil in West Asia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Jaishankar expressed concerns regarding the delay in the execution of the IMEC, citing the need for adjustments in light of the current situation in the region.

Despite the challenges, all stakeholders remain committed to the initiative, viewing it as a significant endeavor.

Initially announced in September, the IMEC aims to establish a comprehensive network encompassing road, railroad, and shipping routes connecting Saudi Arabia, India, the United States, and Europe.

The primary objective is to promote integration across Asia, the Middle East, and the West.

However, the ongoing crisis in West Asia has cast uncertainties on the project's timeline.

Jaishankar acknowledged the complexity of the situation, highlighting various concerns ranging from terrorism to humanitarian issues and the pursuit of a two-state solution.

While awaiting stability in the region, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of striking a balance and ensuring practical implementation on the ground.

In addition to transportation networks, the IMEC also envisions the development of infrastructure such as an electricity cable network, a hydrogen pipeline, and a high-speed data cable network.

These initiatives aim to facilitate economic growth among partner countries.

The IMEC initiative is also perceived as a strategic move by like-minded nations to counter China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which has faced criticism for its lack of transparency and respect for national sovereignty.

The formalization of the IMEC took place on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi, with India, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the US, and other G20 partners signing an agreement for the corridor.

The recent escalation of tensions in West Asia, including attacks on Israel by Hamas, has further complicated the geopolitics.

India has called for de-escalation and stressed the need for direct peace negotiations to address the Palestine issue.
