'They will kill you': How Hasina's family urged her to flee

Protesters demonstrate in Dhaka.

In a revealing interview on Wednesday, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, disclosed the tense circumstances leading to his mother's departure from Bangladesh. Joy stated that Sheikh Hasina was initially reluctant to leave Dhaka, necessitating intense persuasion from her family.

"I was worried not because she was leaving Bangladesh, but because she didn't want to leave Bangladesh. We had to convince her. I said this is not a political movement anymore, this is a mob ... they are going to kill you," Joy said.

Contrary to speculations, Joy clarified that Hasina had not sought asylum in the United States or the United Kingdom. Instead, she is currently in Delhi, where she intends to stay for a while.

Sheikh Hasina left Dhaka on a military aircraft on Monday, landing at Ghaziabad's Hindon airport. She was then swiftly transported to a secure location.

Hours after she fled, a mob of students protesting against quotas in government jobs ransacked her residence. According to Joy, the decision for Hasina to resign had been made the previous day.

"She had made the decision a day earlier. Only a few of us knew that she would announce she was resigning and that she planned to ensure a transition of power according to the Constitution. But when they [protesters] began marching towards Ganabhaban, we said out of fear, there was no more time. You have to leave now," he said.

Joy also mentioned that Hasina has not decided to move from India to another location yet. He noted that she is currently staying with his sister in Delhi and is very upset.

"Sheikh Hasina is well and now in Delhi. My sister is with her. My sister lives in Delhi... She is well, but very upset," he added.

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefed an all-party meeting on Tuesday, stating that Sheikh Hasina is in a state of shock. The Indian government is giving her time to recover before discussing her future plans.
