At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as several celebrities descended at the venue dressed in finesse, a massive gathering of pro-Palestitnian protestors continued their protests against Israel's action in Gaza.
In Central Park, a group held cardboard signs bearing messages such as "No Met Gala While Bombs Drop in Gaza" and "No Celebration Without Liberation."
Along Fifth Avenue, a larger contingent raised Palestinian flags, their chants of "Gaza! Gaza!" reverberating through the evening air.
The New York Police Department tried to cull the protests. Tensions mounted as several arrests were made, drawing criticism from some for what they perceived as a heavy-handed approach.
The protest comes amid news of Hamas agreeing to terms on a ceasefire, with Israel holding out—saying the deal falls short and requires more negotiating. Meanwhile, Israel is continuing its planned offensive in Rafah, a southern city in Gaza, where millions of Palestinians have taken shelter and set up camps.
More than 1,000 protesters were marching through Manhattan on Monday evening, reported the New York Post.
