Thousands of Italian workers strike against Giorgia Meloni’s 2025 budget.

Thousands of workers in Italy are demonstrating against the Georgia Meloni Government’s 2025 budget, saying the proposed bill would “further worsen people’s living and working conditions in the country.

Trade unions are criticising the Meloni government over spending on defence while cutting the budget for healthcare and education. The strike comes as a budget is expected to be discussed next week and must be approved by the country’s parliament by the end of this year.

Italy’s CGIL union has estimated that some 61 per cent of all public and private sector workers participated in the ongoing strike.

CGIL Chief Maurizio Landini said, “The majority of the workers who keep this country going don't agree with and don't accept this government's budget.”

“Ongoing protest shows more clearly that we need a change from the current government,” he said.

Italian workers have been demonstrating against the Meloni government for what they believe are repressive policies and the government's unapologetic support for Israel during its invasion of Gaza.

The budget is being put forth by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her right-wing Brothers of Italy party.

It’s because of these moves and policies that the Meloni government’s rankings, as indicated in the recent survey, tanked in 2025.

CGIL, which represents 5 million workers, half of whom are pensioners, argues that the new budget would "worsen people's living and working conditions."

The government, on the other hand, said the proposed budget has been well received by financial markets and ratings agencies.
