At least three people were injured on Saturday after a gunman opened fire at a marketplace in a town in central Germany, officials said. The shooting incident took place at a sports betting shop at the market square in Giessen, part of the central state of Hesse. The Giessen has around 93,000 people.
The suspected individual was caught hours after fleeing the spot, the authorities said. The reports on Sunday suggested that all the injured were shifted to the hospital, and they were said to be in stable condition.
Police had temporarily cordoned off the market square following reports about a shooting, which took place around 3:10 local time (1310 GMT).
Police have begun the investigation into the shooting incident, as the situation and motive behind the attack are still unknown.
Germany has witnessed multiple shooting incidents this year. In one of the attacks in April this year, a police officer killed his wife, two children, and himself with his service weapon.
Subsequently, in another attack in February, several shots were fired at the regional court of Bielefeld during the Besar Nimani murder trial. Some of the gunfire was directed from a passing car. At least four people were injured, including the father and brother of the defendant.
Two suspects were arrested at the scene. Nimani's sister was held on suspicion of attempted murder.
