Bajrang Punia, renowned for his remarkable performances on the wrestling mat, faced a significant setback in the men’s freestyle 65kg category. Despite being a vocal critic of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Punia's wrestling prowess couldn't secure him a victory.

He succumbed to a resounding 1-9 defeat in the semifinals against Rohit Kumar. The loss effectively ended Punia's bid for Olympic qualification in the 65kg weight category.

Adding to the disappointment, Punia's untimely exit from the competition raised eyebrows. Following his defeat, Punia left the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre without participating in the third-fourth place bout or undergoing the mandatory dope test.

This sudden departure underscores the frustration and disappointment experienced by Punia, who had invested considerable effort in his training endeavors, including a stint in Russia.

Meanwhile, in the fiercely contested men’s 57kg category, another Tokyo Games medalist, Ravi Dahiya, found himself in a challenging position. Dahiya, a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, faced off against emerging talent Aman Sehrawat.

Despite his illustrious track record, Dahiya struggled to regain his momentum after returning from an injury. In a closely contested bout, he suffered a narrow 13-14 defeat to Aman Sehrawat, who has been making waves with consistent performances on the wrestling circuit.

The defeat dealt a significant blow to Dahiya's hopes of securing an Olympic berth. Despite his valiant efforts to stage a comeback, Dahiya's aspirations were further dashed as he lost a subsequent bout to U20 Asian champion Udit.

With back-to-back defeats, Dahiya's dreams of Olympic qualification came to an abrupt end, marking a disappointing turn of events for the talented wrestler.

The outcomes of the selection trials serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of competitive sports. While Punia and Dahiya undoubtedly possess immense talent and potential, their recent setbacks highlight the challenges and uncertainties inherent in the pursuit of Olympic glory.

Despite the disappointment, both athletes remain formidable contenders in the wrestling arena, and their resilience and determination are sure to fuel their future endeavors.

As Punia and Dahiya regroup and refocus their efforts, they will undoubtedly draw inspiration from their past successes and use their setbacks as stepping stones toward future triumphs.

While the road to the Paris Olympics may have presented unexpected hurdles, both athletes remain poised to overcome challenges and continue their pursuit of excellence in the world of wrestling.
