Canadian PM Justin Trudeau steps down

Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced his resignation on Monday, saying he could no longer lead the country after facing internal struggles. Trudeau, who served as party leader and Prime Minister, stated that Canada deserves a real choice in the next election, and he no longer believes he is the best option for that.

Trudeau's resignation came after several members of his Cabinet, including former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, stepped down due to disagreements over his economic priorities. Freeland's departure followed that of the housing minister, leaving questions about Trudeau’s future.

Who is Justin Trudeau?

Justin Trudeau became Canada's 23rd Prime Minister in 2015, following in the footsteps of his father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Known for his good looks and charisma, he was once compared to John F. Kennedy and became one of Canada’s most recognised politicians.

Before entering politics, Trudeau worked as a teacher, nightclub bouncer, and snowboard instructor.

Controversies and challenges of Justin Trudeau

Trudeau’s time as Prime Minister was marked by progressive policies on social justice, immigration, and environmental issues. However, his popularity has declined in recent years. One major issue was his stance on immigration, which grew as a point of contention for many Canadians.

Trudeau also introduced a carbon tax and supported a controversial pipeline expansion project to boost Alberta’s oil exports.

Despite his efforts, Trudeau faced criticism over rising costs of food and housing, which fueled dissatisfaction among Canadian voters. Many were frustrated with the increased cost of living and the surge in immigration following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump’s threats and rising tensions

Trudeau’s challenges intensified with US President-elect Donald Trump’s threat to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian goods unless Trudeau stemmed the flow of migrants and drugs into the US. This added pressure on the already unpopular Prime Minister.

Tensions with India

In addition to domestic issues, Trudeau's relationship with India soured in 2023 when he accused the Indian government of being involved in the killing of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This sparked a major diplomatic fallout, with India expelling Canadian diplomats and recalling its ambassador.

Many critics believe that Trudeau’s accusations against India were politically motivated, aiming to gain support from Khalistani Sikh voters in Canada. This controversy only added to the challenges he faced during his time in office.

Justin Trudeau resigns: A new era for Canada?

With his resignation, Justin Trudeau's tenure as Canada PM comes to an end. As Canada moves forward, the question remains: what direction will the country take in the wake of his leadership?
