United States President Donald Trump on Saturday claimed that US forces had captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and allowed them to fly out of the country in the aftermath of the large-scale strikes reported in Caracas.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country.”
"This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M. at Mar-a-Lago. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP."
If the claims are true, the Venezuelan constitution states that power would pass to Maduro’s Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, who runs the economic affairs of the South American Nation.
The matter is complex since the United States government does not recognise Maduro as the legitimate President, while the country’s leading opposition party claims that the rightful president is the exiled former political leader Edmundo Gonzalez.
Meanwhile, the government of Venezuela, after the midnight strikes, accused the United States of carrying out military aggression on Caracas and other parts of the country.
The large-scale attacks forced the Venezuelan government to declare a national emergency.
