US President Donald Trump announced a three-day Russia-Ukraine ceasefire during Victory Day celebrations, with both sides also agreeing to a major prisoner swap.

United States President Donald Trump has announced a three-day temporary truce between Russia and Ukraine as Moscow marks the 81st Victory Day celebrations of World War II. In a post on Truth Social late on Friday, the US President said that a truce would last from Saturday to Monday.

“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE-DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump posted.

Shortly after, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on X that a three-day truce had been arranged as part of US mediation to end the four-year-long war, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov later said, “An agreement on this matter was reached during our telephone contacts with the US administration. In turn, US representatives were in contact with Kyiv.”

He said the agreement came into being following a recent telephonic conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump in which both heads of state discussed their role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War II.

“This request was made directly by me,” Trump said on Friday, thanking his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts for agreeing to it.

“The Celebration in Russia is for Victory Day, likewise, in Ukraine, because they were also a big part and factor of World War II. This Ceasefire will include a suspension of all kinetic activity and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each Country,” Trump said.

During his 2nd presidential bid, Trump had promised to end the war in Ukraine within weeks of assuming office; however, he has not been able to achieve anything substantive over the past year.

Both sides are continuing to fight in Ukraine, while civilians also bear the brunt of the war due to the territorial ambitions of the two sides.
