United States President Donald Trump has claimed that America possesses powerful secret weaponry “that nobody has any idea about,” as the ongoing trade war with China enters a new phase of tit-for-tat tariffs.

Trump’s remarks came shortly after Washington raised tariff duties on Chinese imports to 125 per cent on Wednesday, in retaliation to Beijing’s move to impose 84 per cent tariffs on US goods earlier in the week.

Although the Chinese Ministry of Commerce has not yet issued a formal response to the latest hike, it had previously pledged to “fight the trade war to the end.”

Asked whether he was worried about a possible escalation “beyond the trade war”, Trump downplayed the risks, praising Chinese President Xi Jinping as “one of the very smart people of the world” who, he said, would never “allow that to happen.”

“We’re very powerful. This country is very powerful. It’s far more powerful than people understand,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

“We have weaponry that nobody has any idea what it is, and it is the most powerful weapon in the world that we have. More powerful than anybody even, not even close,” he said.

Trump, known for his provocative and unconventional rhetoric, did not elaborate on the nature of the technology he referenced. It remains unclear whether the president was referring to any particular defence programme.

In 2020, Trump had made similar claims about a “super duper missile” which he said could travel “17 times faster” than any adversary’s arsenal. At the time, he also alleged that Russian hypersonic advances were due to the theft of American missile technology during Barack Obama’s presidency—despite the US still lacking an operational hypersonic missile system.

The US-China trade war has continued to intensify over issues of market access, intellectual property, and geopolitical tensions. With neither side signalling a willingness to compromise, the dispute shows little sign of easing.
