Trump claims to have ended 7 'unendable wars' at UNGA

At the UN General Assembly, US President Donald Trump reiterated his claim of playing a role in defusing military tensions between India and Pakistan.

President Donald Trump address the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Tuesday.

President Donald Trump addressed the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, asserting that within just seven months of his presidency, he had accomplished what others deemed impossible by ending seven “unendable” wars.

Among these, he reiterated his claim of brokering a truce between India and Pakistan in May 2025, despite India’s firm denial of any US involvement. Trump’s remarks at the UN doubled down on this narrative, spotlighting his role in resolving global conflicts and his criticisms of the United Nations.

“In just 7 months, I have ended 7 unendable wars,” Trump declared to world leaders. “They said they were unendable, some were going for 31-years, one was 36 years. I ended 7 wars and in all cases they were raging, with countless thousands of people being killed.” He listed the conflicts he claimed to have resolved, including those between Cambodia and Thailand, Serbia, the Congo and Rwanda, Pakistan and India, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Trump, who has openly expressed his ambition to win a Nobel Prize, has repeatedly claimed to have played a pivotal role in mediating a truce between India and Pakistan following a military standoff. The tensions arose after New Delhi launched an attack on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

On May 10, Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire through talks mediated by Washington. Since then, he has consistently highlighted this claim at various conferences, state addresses, and now at the UN General Assembly.

However, India has steadfastly maintained that the ceasefire agreement was reached through direct negotiations between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two countries, without any third-party involvement. This position was reinforced by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in a rare public statement earlier this month. Speaking to mediapersons, Dar said, “India never agreed to any third-party mediation” on bilateral issues. “We don’t mind third-party involvement, but India has categorically been stating it’s a bilateral matter.”

In his UN address, Trump also criticised the United Nations, expressing frustration over its inaction in resolving the conflicts he claimed to have ended. “It’s too bad I had to do these things instead of the UN doing them, and sadly, the UN did not try to help in any of them,” he said. He further remarked, “I ended seven wars, dealt with leaders of each and every nation but did not even receive a phone call from the UN.”

Trump also recounted logistical issues during his visit to the UN, stating, “All I got from the UN was an escalator that on the way up stopped right in the middle. If the First Lady (Melania Trump) wasn’t in great shape, she would have fallen. But she’s in great shape. We are both in a good shape.” He added, “Trump said there are only two things he has got from the US - a bad escalator and a broken teleprompter.”

A video from the UN Headquarters confirmed that an escalator malfunctioned as Trump and Melania stepped onto it, and the teleprompter failed just before his speech, forcing him to read from a paper copy. Trump light-heartedly referenced these incidents during his address, using them to underscore his broader critique of the UN, stating that the organisation “has tremendous potential but is not living up to it.”
